Mission: Character Development
Location: Ira’s Quarters
Timeline: Six months after 'The Admiral's Daughter'

Ira let out a laugh as she leaned back into her new couch. Kerry had convinced her to bring in some new furniture to make her quarters a bit more personalized. After living off Starfleet and their standard-issue whatevers that were given to her, Ira agreed that it would be a nice change.

They had been spending more and more time together, both in and out of Ops. Ira had felt a growing deeper personal connection build with Kerry the longer they worked together. They had managed to streamline the base and increase its efficiency levels to far higher than they both expected. They worked well as a team, often finding no need to speak their thoughts to each other since they were often rather similar ideas.

Ira ran her hands along the charcoal gray material that lay underneath her. It was a three-seater with thick cushions and perfect for the frequent naps Ira took whenever she could fit them in with her rather long work hours. She had purchased a matching love seat and a large papasan type chair that held an old Earth Scandinavian red and off-white print cushion. The coffee table was of a strong black metal like the material used for her arm. Ira had a little bit of fun putting it together. This was the first time she had ever done something extravagant for herself.

Så er den ged barberet,” Ira spoke with a satisfied sigh.

Kerry was sat down next to her on the new couch, admiring her new step towards really settling in. It had been a very interesting six months, and he was so glad he'd taken the step to ask her out. The sheer amount of fun they'd had together had been more than he'd expected, and she was actually a whole lot more than she had first appeared. She was witty, with a strong desire to engage in shenanigans outside of duty. She'd expressed an interest in Kerry's hobbies, and had really enjoyed herself with a few of them. Out of fairness, he'd tried tap-dancing, but kept falling over, so he'd just elected to watch her instead.

As he saw the look of pleasure and satisfaction on her face, but didn't recognise the statement, he looked at her with a puzzled expression. "Huh?" He asked. She was always doing that, saying things in Danish he didn't understand. He'd taken to trying to learn Danish, but he had only been at it for a few weeks. He'd wanted to surprise her by speaking Danish or even understanding what she'd said, but so far, he knew how to ask where the train station was... that was it.

Ira gave him a chuckle, "It means 'Now that goat has been shaved' in reference to a task being completed. My quarters is now furnished, therefore I say Så er den ged barberet!" Turning herself onto her side, Ira rested her left arm across the back of the couch and faced Kerry. "So, now that that's done, what did you have in mind for tonight? Dinner, walking around, something like that?"

"What an odd saying." Kerry chuckled. "I mean, its technically accurate, but still..." He then turned to her question.

"Hmm... I think I'd quite like a nice quiet night in, if I'm honest." Kerry said, moving to face her. "It's been a busy day, and I really would rather just spend time alone with you." He said, gently placing his hand on her leg. He'd been giving Ira her space and time with physical intimacy, but lord knows he wanted to express how he felt for her physically. Over the last six months, his feelings for her had truly manifest themselves, and he was no longer confused about them. He was 'chomping at the bit' to hold her, kiss her, touch, caress, and yes, be 'intimate' with her. To quote Matt's awful statement 'one does not buy an expensive car to look at, one wants to get behind the wheel and ride in it.'

Kerry's touch felt different somehow to her. Sure, they had held hands and hugged, but this was a bit more... electric. Ira had been wary about their relationship getting to this point. In all of her past experiences, she had been used by evil targets she had been seeking to destroy. Being intimate with someone held no meaning to her anymore. But for some reason when this man came into her life, it garnered a whole new significance. This was more than the act itself, it was the meaning behind the actions. The way Kerry looked at her... no one ever looked at her that way. Their eyes were always burning with a hunger for what her body could potentially offer. While Kerry did look at her that way sometimes, there was always something else to it. He just enjoyed looking at her. His attempts at tap dancing, while rather humorous, told her that he was willing to do anything and try anything to see the smile grow on her face.

She also looked at him the same way. Ira would sneak in looks while they were at the gym, or whenever he bent forward slightly over the Ops computer. But she never acted. She didn't know how to. She didn't know what the consequences would have been. There were far too many possibilities with potentially negative results. Why was she still preventing herself from pushing past her fear of intimate relations and contacts when their relationship had been so solid for the past six months?

Ira brushed her long brown hair behind her shoulder and looked at Kerry, trying not to show too much of her thought process. "Did you want to cook something? Or I can go pick something up...?" She left his hand where it was, seeing how it would move on its own.

She hadn't reacted negatively to the hand on her leg. This was a good sign, and she looked pensive as well, as if she'd been giving some thought to the situation. Naturally, he wasn't a mind reader, but he could tell she was curious about his intentions, and his touch, but not put off. It was a crucial step for Kerry, and one that was fraught with risk. He wanted to be with her, to hold her, stroke her hair, taste her lips, he wanted what she had. It wasn't just carnal lust, but a desire to physically express his emotional bond with her.

He left the question unanswered as he moved his other hand up to her cheek, and caressed it gently with the back of his hand, looking into her beautiful deep blue eyes. It was one of her most redeeming physical features, and he could stare at them for hours and be totally lost in them. Oh sure, she had other exceptional physical assets, and he'd have a cheeky look every now and then when she reached over a console, or bent over to read a display. He was only male after all.

Ira’s breath sucked in slightly as the graze of his hand sent a chill up her spine. What was this man doing to her? She felt off of her game. She could no longer hide from him. She had spent far too much time with Kerry to be able to hold back from him. She felt stuck, like she couldn’t push his cheek off because the new sensation frightened her. She completely understood where this one touch was going to lead to. It was a slippery slope she needed to tread lightly.

Her main concern wasn’t how she would feel afterwards. She had an uncanny ability to separate her emotions from her actions and compartmentalise everything into neat little sections. Her main concern was how he saw her. Would he still look at her the same way? Once they took this step, there was no coming back.

Ira’s brows furrowed slightly as the tension and anticipation built between them. “Kerry…” she said with a slight exhale of her warm breath. “You know everything is going to change, right?”

He looked at her carefully when she said that. He could sense her reticence, her hesitation. Given the amount of time they'd spent together, the nights they'd sat up talking, getting to know one another. Kerry knew her probably better than anyone else alive at this point. She'd taken time to open up to him, but bit by bit, she had slowly opened her heart to him. He knew there were things she simply couldn't tell him, and not because she didn't want to, but because he wasn't cleared to know them.

Right now, he knew her reluctance wasn't because she didn't want to be with him, she probably did, but it may be potentially that she was worried that this might ruin things between them. It really hadn't dawned on Kerry quite how much importance Ira really put into their relationship, how significant it was to her that nothing spoil it. Kerry had originally pegged it down to her need to use her sexuality on jobs, but he'd dismissed that. He'd had meaningless sex in his life too, that didn't mean that being with someone for fun ruined the experience when you were with someone you loved and were expressing that love.

He placed his hand on her cheek and looked into her eyes again, providing a reassuring smile. "Ira, I know everything will change, but sometimes - change is good." He said. "Do you believe me when I say that no matter what happens, I'll always care for you deeply, and will always be here for you."

"No, I mean this is it. Once this happens you will have a much more difficult time keeping your eyes off of me whenever I reach over a desk." The corner of Ira's lips curled up into a mischievous smirk. "I knew you cared about me when you learned how to say 'My hovercraft is full of eels' in Danish." His answer had been more than sufficient. Change was indeed good, especially when the change solidified the glue that held together their bond.

"I already have a substantially difficult time keeping my eyes off you." Kerry chuckled. "It's your own fault for being so stunning, beautiful, amazing and having a perfect body to go with all that." With that, he leaned in and kissed her tenderly on the lips. There was a little noise where they kissed, and in the silence of the room, it sounded just right. He pulled away by about half an inch, then opened his eyes to look into hers.

Ira's eyes opened slowly, still feeling the brush of his lips on hers. This was it. He had her. There was so much said in that moment and they didn't even speak. As her eyes look around his own, she saw the small light brown flecks in them that danced as he looked at her. She never noticed them before. Ira rubbed her lips together as she brushed the metal of her left hand against his jaw. After a moment she leaned forward, running her lips against his and wanting to feel whatever she felt again and again and again. She realized she had been missing out on far too much in her life.

He felt her responding to his touch, his feelings. Ira wanted to be with him as much as he wanted to be with her, he could tell. So many inhibitions she had for her own safety and protection, as well as for him, were being swept aside. This wasn't an overabundance of passion taking over either, this was rational. This was true feelings coming through. He leaned forward and kissed her again, gently lowering her down onto the couch on her back, as he continued to kiss and gently caress her. Although this would hardly be her first time, he wanted to make their first time, and Ira's first meaningful time, something special.

---------------------------------

Ira sat up on her side on her bed, resting her elbow against the mattress and feeling the chill of the room against her bare skin. It was a wise move for them to take things into here. Much more comfortable and more room for them. It also made sense why Kerry had convinced her to go with the larger bed.

There were no words that could explain everything that she was feeling, that she was allowing herself to feel. She was so used pushing her emotions to the side and burying them deep down into the darkest depths of her mind. But after feeling Malone's bare skin against hers, she forced herself to acknowledge the joy, the exhilaration, of what she had just participated in. She had been right; things were now different. They were better. Ira and Kerry connected on a whole new level where he had seen and felt every part of her. She was glad they waited. And she hoped he was glad too.

The woman pulled up the blanket over her, keeping her augmented arm exposed to the draft. Her eyes moved slowly up and down Kerry as they landed on his lips that were curled up in a slightly goofy grin. Ira tilted her head to the side and furrowed her brows a bit at him, then moved her left hand over to his face and ran her fingertips underneath his bottom lip. "What's with the grin?"

He looked at her in awe. He'd waited patiently (considerably so) for six months for this moment, and he was so glad he had. It had not only been passionate and enjoyable, it had been sensual and erotic as well. He'd felt Ira's unparalleled joy and happiness at a coupling that had meaning. It had been the culmination of all their feelings for each other, and it was an event that six months ago, Kerry hadn't even thought was possible. There he was, lying next to Ira, admiring all her beauty in all its forms. Even the artificial arm was enticing in its own way.

"Oh, just remembering how reluctant you had been over half a year ago to even call me by my first name. Now, I'm lying here, in your bed, having had the most wonderful evening with you, and all I can think of is your reaction to Min luftpudebåd er fyldt med ål..."

Ira let out a soft chuckle as he stumbled over his pronunciation of the words. It only added to his boyish charms. "Don't let those pleasure hormones go to your head now..." Her body was relaxed for the first time since before her parents' death. She didn't feel like she had to be in permanent defence mode around him. The way he looked at her was more than enough acceptance of that fact. She still kept her guard up around others due to the line of work she was in, but Kerry no longer needed to worry. He had her trust. He had her everything. "Now you can run to Matt and have your little girl talk. I'm sure he's been telling you to grow a proverbial pair and just make your move as he did before you told me how you really felt about me."

Kerry narrowed his eyes at her. "You know, dating an intelligence officer can sometimes really suck, you know that?" He teased her. "Matt only gave me the encouragement to do what I knew I needed to do in the first place. Just the friendly nudge in the right direction." Chuckling, he brushed an errant strand of her hair out of her face and behind her ear. "Not that I needed much encouragement, just wanted to make sure I did the right thing by you, that's all."

"My particular set of skills do come in rather handy sometimes," Ira kissed him playfully on his smiling lips. "Just wait until you see me snap a man's neck with one hand. Though I might be a little rusty, it's been a while..." Her eyes crinkled in the corners at her slight joke that was sprinkled with a bit of truth. Her fingers moved slowly down his neck then to the outside of his shoulders. "I'm glad you waited."

"Me too." He smiled, running a finger across the bridge of her nose. "Wait, you can snap a man's neck with one hand? How cool is that! I mean, not for the person whose neck has been snapped, but still..." He chuckled. "You know, there's a holodeck adventure program I've been meaning to try out with you, one of those Ivy Rellik ones. Its based on something called 'Jumangi'. Its supposed to be quite entertaining as you try to survive in a world that's hell-bent on killing you."

“Since I’ve already lived through a world like that,” Ira laid back down on her pillow and scooted up against Kerry, “I can help give you some pointers.”

Kerry snuggled up to her, putting his arm under her so that he could cuddle. This felt natural somehow, like it was always meant to be. He honestly could stay like this for ever - if wishes were possible anyway. "Considering I can't even walk down a mountain without falling over, any help you can give would be gratefully accepted. I'm a fighter pilot, not a ground pounder. I'm totally out of my element in ground combat." He then paused and considered something.

"Actually, I don't feel so self-conscious asking you for this, but could you help me improve my ground combat abilities? I went straight from the cockpit to command, and whilst I passed the basic proficiency for ground combat, I barely passed, and didn't bother to do any refresher training for my entire tenure. I feel that I'd be far less embarrassed getting a refresher course from you, and you're probably more proficient than most of the marines here."

Ira looked up at him and smiled. “It’s fairly similar to the Marine training, though a bit more... sleek, I guess you could say. Some of my assignments required a certain level of stealthiness. I would be more than happy to help you. It would also help me keep up my skills”

"So, basically, you would categorise your training as a lot like yourself." Kerry said. "Sleek, appealing, yet deadly."

“You make me sound like a black widow or something,” Ira sat up again and looked down at Kerry’s deep brown eyes. “I only did it when it was necessary, much like when you have destroyed an enemy craft with your torpedos.”

"Hey, I was only teasing." Kerry said, sitting back up, disgruntled that he'd ruined the mood they'd had and thereby ended the snuggling. "No one enjoys having to do what we do, and if they do, they should be locked up for their own good. I'm just glad you're here with me, that's all."

Ira looked over his face once more for good measure. She couldn’t help but still occasionally feel like she was a part of a circus freak show no matter how hard Kerry tried to make her feel normal. She gave him a half-smile as she tucked her hair behind her ear. “I guess I should be thanking my skills for making sure I made it here. Not necessarily in one piece, though.”

"Well, I'm grateful." Kerry said, and in a reassuring gesture, caressed her bionic arm. "You made it through some seriously nasty crap, and you're here to tell the tale. That's all any of us could hope for."

“I’m here. I’m alive. I’m breathing...” Ira stated softly to herself. While she had originally given Kerry the words as a reminder to live in the present, she had come to find great comfort in repeating the words out loud. It was at that moment that she realized the slight irony in the statement. She told Kerry he was going to find someone who would remind him of those words every day. It turned out she was that woman.

"Indeed you are." Kerry smiled, then leaned forward and kissed her on the lips, then ran his hand down the length of her body, coming to a rest on her thigh. "You are most certainly here. You are most certainly alive...." He moved his hand teasingly, to cause her to catch her breath. "...and you are certainly breathing..." He said, teasingly.
