Personality & Traits

General Overview Jon has a relaxed attitude to most things in life. He's easy going and generally well liked amongst his peers. This was not always the case. As a young man, he worked hard to realise his goal of joining the Starfleet Marine corps. He achieved that and worked hard at his training, gaining a reputation for humourless intensity. He performed well and started active service just after the beginning of the Dominion war. His first combat experience was extremely traumatic and left him with PTSD. After significant therapy, Jon emerged a changed man with a very different attitude to service, combat and Starfleet.

He tends towards a friendly relationship with those under his care, often leading to long term friendships with former shipmates. As he has grown older, he has found himself in a mentoring role to some. Despite not actively chasing promotion, his time in the fleet has led him to have the ear of a number of command level officers and a level of influence that some senior fleet commanders are uncomfortable with.

History

Personal History Jonathan Russell grew up with an uncle in the Starfleet Marine corps. He idolised the man and was absolutely determined to follow in his footsteps. Whilst his parents, local government officials, were not thrilled with the idea, they nonetheless supported him in his chosen goal. He worked hard on his fitness and spent hours learning all he could about the corps and any subjects that he felt could help him become a Marine.

He was accepted into the training program, an ideal candidate, or so it seemed. His work ethic continued throughout the training. He studied hard and pushed himself and his classmates, earning a generally positive reputation, although he didn't have much in the way of a sense of humour.

Not long before the end of his training, the Dominion war broke out in earnest. The Marine corps saw it's profile raised as combat began all over the alpha and beta quadrants. Jon had been prepared for the possibility, but going straight into a war was an intimidating prospect for anyone.

Jon was assigned to one of the many active combat units for the war. He got on well with his comrades, earning their respect and even began to mellow a little. Within weeks, the unit were assigned to the defense of Sigma Romana, a colony and dilithium mine that was considered a high consequence target near the border.

It wasn't long until Sigma Romana was attacked. The fighting was fierce, the planetary defences were quickly overwhelmed, although Dominion losses were high, and the fighting began planetside. The Jem’Hadar were brutal and fearless, tearing into the marines causing heavy losses. While the Federation forces eventually repelled the invasion, the losses were huge. Jon was pulled from the battlefield, grievously injured.

The young man's wounds took months to heal, but his psychological trauma was far more significant. He was diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder which was further complicated by an addiction to the painkillers that he had been prescribed. It took many months for Jon to admit he had a problem, and more still to work through his addiction. Eventually, Jon found that working with others in a similar position to him proved to be the key to his recovery.

By the time Jon reached sobriety, he knew that he no longer wanted to be in the Marine corps. He resigned, and joined Starfleet, focussing on counseling instead. It proved to be a positive change for him and he thrived in the new environment. He gained a dry sense of humour from his experiences and an insight somewhat beyond his years.

Throughout his time in the fleet, he worked in a variety of assignments, mostly starships and found that a friendly, approachable persona helped him perform at his best. He struck up friendships with many of the crew members he served alongside, leading to him having the ear of a number of different Captains, and even and Admiral or two. Promotion wasn't his focus though, preferring to just do his job well and help people.

Jon is in a long term, long distance relationship with Anne-Marie Marquez, a fellow counselor. She is based on Earth, and Jon gets back to visit her when he can. Whilst their relationship is good, they don't have any plans to progress it further.
